The Walls Speak - Miami Street Art

SIMILAR: SUNNIES, JACKET, SNEAKERS

The world is our runway…and our canvas too.

Thanks to the prominent urban art scene in Puerto Rico I’ve been a fan of street art and murals ever since I was a kid. It’s like the walls are speaking a form of street poetry, if you will, and I’ve always felt a connection with it. A lot of people seem to feel this way as Wynwood – Miami’s prime art hub – is now a major tourist attraction. The walls are covered in gargantuan, albeit beautiful works by established muralists from around the world. While I LOVE murals and consider it a positive form of community beautification, i can’t help but wonder about the smaller visual poets and painters (NOT to be confused with the tagging vandals). Where can their “voices” be heard? Enter abandoned factories and cavernous warehouses. It’s quite special to discover an old structure that was once bustling with life, now taken over almost post-apocalyptically by a mix of nature and aerosol. My friend Nelson and I shot this in Wynwood (points if you can guess where), and came across an artist trying to finish his artwork, while simultaneously swatting at bees. It was funny to see nature trying to reclaim this land, but I felt for the guy. He was just trying to finish his little mural in peace.
Fashion may take a bit of a back seat in this post, because I sort of wanted to blend in with this magical place. I hope you like it! Scroll down for photos and outfit details <3
